Christian Passover: Easter Jesse Tree

What do you do to help inspire the children in your life to focus their mind’s attention and their heart’s affection on the Lord during the “Easter” season?

As children, many of us looked ahead to the holiday as a day when we would put on new springy Easter clothes, eat chocolate bunnies, paint eggs and go on an Easter egg hunt. As we grew older we began to ask questions like, what do bunnies that lay eggs have to do with Jesus? And why do we say the Easter Bunny lays eggs anyway? We eventually find out that the answers lie in paganism. However, since these roots have been lost, we merely follow these traditions because of the joy that we experienced in our own childhood.

But now it is our turn. We are the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles that will frame how we will celebrate the teachings and resurrection of Jesus. As for our family, we have decided to practice Easter traditions that are not only joyous, but guide our children into reflection and worship. Therefore, we looked to the teachings of Scripture in order to rediscover the meaning of Easter and infuse our holiday with traditions that will equip our children to enter into their own sacred rhythms of meaningful reflection. If our children find these traditions to be so impactful, when the time comes for them to disciple their children and grandchildren, they will easily be able to pass on what they have known and practiced from their youth.

For many years, my wife and I have celebrated Christian Passover in our house. However, for the first few years, we found that because of the traditional order of service most often our focus was on Moses and the Exodus. As we developed our practices, we continued to find ways to tie the Passover to Jesus and the more that I studied, the more that we realized the importance of the Passover and the Exodus for Christianity.

The life of Jesus fulfills God’s promises and prophecies and gives new meaning to the history of the Old Testament, especially the events of the Exodus. God was using the history of the Old Testament as a preview of what was to come in Jesus! Moses and all that happens during the Exodus from Egypt preview what God was going to do in a New Exodus led by a new prophet like Moses who would himself become the Passover lamb, would give us a new law, feed us with manna from heaven, lead us in the true light, and give us living water to drink.

My wife and I have therefore developed this 8 day Christian Passover teaching curriculum and ornaments to be used with a Jesse tree. Each day traces a connection between the Exodus from Egypt and the New Exodus led by Jesus.
