This is the next in our series this week of 8 lessons explaining Jewish History as Christian Prophecy. Each day is a story connecting the Jewish Passover with the work of Jesus. You can follow along by making your own ornaments or drawing pictures or you can purchase our set of wooden ornaments based upon my hand-stitched set here. The introduction can be read here.
A New Law
Story Significance:
In the same way that the Law came through Moses, grace and truth have come to us through Jesus. This new law will not be like the old law because you broke that law. It will not be written on tablets of stone, but on the tablets of your heart.
Activity for Today:
- Hang the 2 Heart Tablets Ornament: The Roman numerals number from 1-10 for the 10 commandments and it is written not on a tablet of stone, but on the tablets of our hearts!
Bible Overview:
After God brought Israel out of Egypt, He took them to Mt. Sinai and told them to purify themselves, because He was going to make them a kingdom of priests. The Israelites, therefore made preparations to hear the voice of God. However, when the saw the fire on the mountain and heard the sound of thunder and trumpets, they cried out to Moses, “Do not let the Lord speak to us! If He speaks to us we will surely die! You go before us, Moses!” Moses, therefore went up to the mountain and brought back the Law of God.
As they entered into the Promised Land, they walked between Mt. Ebal and Mt. Gerizim. As the entered in, the blessings of the Law were shouted down from Mt. Gerizim, and the curses of the law were shouted down from Mt. Ebal. By walking between these two mountains, Israel was agreeing that as long as they followed in the Law of God, then they would be allowed to stay in the land and receive the blessings of God, but if they did not then they would be kicked out of the land and receive the curses of the law. As time went on, Israel failed to teach their children and grandchildren of all that the Lord had done and to obey His Law. And despite all of the warnings of the prophets and that the Lord was like a loving husband reaching out to them all day long, the people failed to obey God’s Law and in this way called the curses of the Law down upon themselves.
The prophet Jeremiah cried out to the people to repent. He explained that their hearts were deceitfully wicked and they should not trust their hearts or listen to the false prophets who were telling them that God was not going to judge them. But the people refused to listen. Therefore, Israel would now be removed from the land promised to Abraham and be taken into exile in Babylon. But as they were in Babylon, God spoke through Jeremiah and said “I will give put my Spirit inside of you and give you a new law. This law will not be like the old law because you broke that law. It will not be written on tablets of stone, but on the tablets of your heart. For I will forgive their sin and no longer remember their wickedness.”
When Jesus comes He teaches that we cannot simply live by outwardly obeying the word of the law; they must also obey in their hearts. It is not just what we say and do to other people, we should must love them in our hearts as well. During Passover, He takes the cup and says, this is a New Covenant in my blood; as often as you celebrate, celebrate in My memory. And He said, said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”[i] We have, therefore, received Grace upon grace from His fullness, for the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. And if we walk in the Spirit, then we are not under law, but under Christ.
