Out of the Silence: Fostering Reflection in Little Hearts

Where does God Live?

How big is my soul?

Can God die?

These questions come out of the silence. Where are these questions coming from? Why are they asking them now?

At first they caught me off guard as I had no idea the depths to which my child was capable of thinking. But as the years pass, I have begun to see that these questions always come out of the silence. Perceptibly predictable. At bedtime when they are tucked into their beds. Or as they watch the world pass by by them through a minivan window.

The more this pattern becomes clear to me, the more I realize that one of the greatest gifts that anyone can give their children are opportunities to speak out of the silence.

How do we hear it?

So let us linger at their bedsides a few minutes more and lets be a bit more intentional in how we guard the silence. For out of the silence come the most meaningful questions of life.

How big is a soul? Small enough to fit into flannel pajamas. Children have these questions; now all they need is a bit of silence and someone waiting expectantly for the small voice that predictably comes out of the silence.

  1. YES!!! Bedtime for sure! But also while we walk the dog together! I pray I can create more moments of silent reflection for them and for myself, but this world seem to only be getting louder. Blessings!

    1. Good example, the key is facilitating opportunities to bring our minds to rest and our hearts to peace that we might allow the Spirit of God to help us to know and process our innermost thoughts and feelings. Also, it is helpful to guide our children in understanding what is going on internally as we set our minds affection and our hearts attention upon the Lord.
